What to order

Four plates worth the drive down Dominion Road

Photographed at the restaurant. In the Google reviews further down this page, diners name the Hainanese chicken, the laksa and the salted egg squid.

Poached, then sliced

Hainanese chicken rice

Chicken poached until the meat still glistens, laid over bean sprouts in a pool of dark soy and scattered with fried garlic and coriander. It comes out on a silver oval platter, and the rice arrives on a plate of its own.

Wok, high heat

Fried rice vermicelli with prawns and char siu

Thin rice noodles tossed hard with prawns, char siu, coins of Chinese sausage, egg and bean sprouts, then finished with a handful of spring onion. It comes out on a plate wide enough to share.

Under the gravy

Crisp-fried noodles under an egg gravy

A nest of very fine noodles, fried until they crackle, going soft where the gravy soaks in — a thick, pale gravy with ribbons of egg through it. Stems and leaves of choy sum, pale yellow slices and a spoonful of fried shallots go over the top. Bring the spoon as well as the chopsticks.

Crisp-fried pieces in a dark caramel glaze with sesame seeds, sliced onion and coriander
Straight out of the fryer

Crisp-fried and lacquered in dark sauce

Fried until the edges go craggy, then turned through a dark, sticky sauce that clings to every piece. Sliced onion underneath, sesame seeds and a bunch of coriander on top, and a spoon in the plate because nobody wants to leave the sauce behind.

The room

A black shopfront on Dominion Road with the doors folded open

Petaling Malaysian Restaurant sits at 248A Dominion Road in Mount Eden, behind a black sign carrying its Chinese name, 茨廠街馬來風味, in yellow above the red English one. The whole front is folding glass, with one panel pushed back onto the footpath and an OPEN neon in the window; Bar Eden is the doorway next along, at number 250. What the reviews talk about is the pace — a room diners call always packed, young staff who stay friendly through it, and food that one of them says came out really quick. Lunch runs 11 to 3 and dinner 5 to 9:30, every day except Tuesday, with most people spending NZ$20–30 a head. Eat in, take it away, or have it delivered, and the restaurant takes bookings if you are bringing a group.

“Have been here twice in two days because it was so good. I’ve ordered hainanese chicken, laksa, Tom yum, mee goreng, roti chenai and veges in sambal sauce. All was so good. Food came out really quick. This is quickly my new fav”

“I first discovered this place through a Malaysian friend, and it never disappoints. Although the portion sizes have decreased slightly recently, the food is still so delicious that it’s worth it. Even during busy hours, the young staff are always friendly, and I always leave with a smile. I’m worried it’ll get even more crowded, but I truly hope they stay open for a long time!”

“#Malasia food# Highly recommend the salted egg squid – savoury, slightly sweet, and very unique. The bone soup had a lot of pork belly, which made it a bit too fatty for our taste.”
